LED wearable projects are low-voltage and generally very safe, but there are a few practical things to keep in mind when wearing electronics on your body or taking them to events. This guide covers the basics.
Do Not Wash Electronics
This is the most common mistake. LED strands, controllers, battery packs, and matrix panels are not waterproof and should never go through a washing machine or be submerged in water.
- Remove all LED components before washing any garment.
- If you used removable attachment (velcro, clips, loose stitching), detach the electronics first.
- If you used permanent attachment (hot glue), hand-wash the fabric around the electronics without submerging them, or spot-clean only.
- Never iron directly over LED strands or wiring.
Planning ahead: If you know you will want to wash the garment, use velcro or removable clips to attach LED strands instead of hot glue. This makes removal and reattachment easy.

Battery Handling and Storage
Wearable Tutorials products use either USB power banks or small built-in rechargeable lithium batteries. Both are safe for normal use, but follow these guidelines:
- Remove batteries before storage. Disconnect USB power banks from LED strands when not in use. For LED matrix panels, turn off the panel to stop battery drain.
- Do not crush or puncture battery packs. USB power banks and lithium batteries can be damaged by heavy pressure. Do not sit on them, stack heavy objects on top of costumes with batteries inside, or compress them tightly in storage.
- Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving batteries in direct sunlight, hot cars, or humid environments for extended periods.
- Use the included charging cables. Charge LED matrix panel batteries with the included micro USB cable. Use any standard USB cable for power banks.
- Do not use damaged batteries. If a battery pack is swollen, cracked, or not holding a charge, replace it. Do not attempt to repair lithium batteries.
At events: Carry a backup battery if your event runs long. A dead power bank is not dangerous, just inconvenient. Plan for 8 to 12 hours of runtime from a standard 5000mAh USB power bank with LED strands.
Hiding Batteries Safely
Battery packs need to be secured so they do not shift, fall, or pull on wiring during movement. Common safe locations:
- Inside a sewn-in pocket or pouch
- In a belt bag or fanny pack
- Velcroed to the inside of a garment
- Inside a prop (staff, shield, backpack)
Make sure the battery is accessible enough to disconnect if needed. Do not seal it inside a fully enclosed space with no ventilation, although heat generation from USB power banks during normal use is minimal.
For detailed battery placement ideas, see the battery hiding guide and the battery selection guide.
Heat
Wearable Tutorials LED products produce very little heat during normal operation. The LED strands and matrix panels are safe to wear directly against skin or fabric. However:
- Do not cover LEDs with insulating material that traps heat (thick foam, sealed plastic).
- If wearing a fully enclosed helmet or headpiece, leave ventilation openings for airflow.
- USB power banks can get slightly warm during extended use. This is normal. If a power bank feels hot to the touch, disconnect it and let it cool.
Water and Weather
None of the Wearable Tutorials LED products are waterproof. For outdoor events:
- Have a plan to cover or remove electronics if rain starts.
- In dusty environments (desert festivals, outdoor workshops), seal battery connections with tape and keep controllers in a pouch or pocket.
- The LED strands can handle light dust and minor humidity, but avoid direct water contact.
- LED matrix panels should be kept dry. The Bluetooth and battery components are not moisture-sealed.
Test Before Events
Always do a full test run before wearing your project to an event:
- Charge all batteries fully.
- Verify all LED connections are secure and functioning.
- Wear the costume and move around to check that nothing shifts, pulls loose, or feels uncomfortable.
- Test battery life to make sure it covers the event duration.
- Bring your charging cable and a backup battery pack.
Convention tip: Many conventions have charging stations or outlets in common areas. If your event runs long, find one during a break to top off your battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are LED wearables safe for children?
Yes. The LEDs are low-voltage (USB powered, 5V), produce minimal heat, and require no sharp tools to assemble beyond a glue gun. Adult supervision is recommended for children under 13, especially when using a hot glue gun.
Can LED costumes go through airport security?
Generally yes, but battery packs may need to be removed and screened separately. LED components themselves are not restricted items. If traveling with lithium batteries, check airline carry-on rules for battery capacity limits (most USB power banks under 100Wh are allowed in carry-on).
What should I do if an LED strand stops working?
Check the USB connection and power source first. Try a different power bank or USB port. If the strand itself is damaged, contact us. Wearable Tutorials products come with a 60-day tech guarantee.
